Yarra River - Upper Yarrariver

Birrarung (Yarra River) – Upper Yarra Valley

Walk through forest familiar
wild
majestic beauty
childhood contentment
places of play
adventure
discovery
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAgnarled twisted limbs
reach up and out
touch the sky
provide shelter
drip dew from your leaves
capturing
lifeblood of the forest

soft fern-lined gullies
familiar sound
meandering river
your steady
flow to the
sea
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAmisty mornings
cling to my skin
musty smell
reaching up
your soft humus
turning old life into new
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI close my eyes
allow my ears to take in the cacophony
a symphony of sound that heralds your vitality
you are home
home to me
home to many
home in my heart

Birrarung is the name, given by the Wurundjeri people in the Woiwurrung language, to what we call the Yarra River. Birrarung is said to mean ‘river of mists’.
