I have never viewed the humble umbrella beyond its utility. A thing to keep the rain off. It is fair to say that, apart from a random rainbow umbrella, if you were to have said the word umbrella to me 5 weeks ago what would have popped into my head was the visual of a black umbrella with a hooked handle.
The world of umbrellas has since, quite literally, opened up to me. After 4 weeks in monsoonal southern China I have come to possess a technicolour kaleidoscope of umbrellas twirling in my minds eye. Of the thousands of umbrellas I saw, I cannot recollect seeing the same ‘one’ twice. The variation in colours, patterns and trims like a veritable sea of individual fingerprints upon the landscape when the rain came tumbling down or if the sun made its presence felt.
So thank you China for making me appreciate the mundane umbrella in such a new way. Not just its’ many splendid variations but also its versatility in all weather.
